Here’s a quick guide on how to brew loose-leaf green tea.
- Use loose tea leaves and an appropriate teapot. Bring fresh cold water from the tap and bring it to a boil.
- Add 1 teaspoon of green tea per cup into the teapot or into the filter (if using one). The amount of tea depends on how strong you want the tea to be. It’s a matter of taste.
- Pour the hot water over the leaves. The water should not boil for too long. For green tea, the temperature should be between approximately 75 and 85 degrees Celsius. It should not be boiling when poured over the tea leaves.
- Put the lid on the teapot and let the tea steep for a specific number of minutes. 2-3 minutes is often fine. Once the tea has reached the desired strength, remove the leaves from the teapot. This separates the liquid from the leaves and prevents the tea from developing a bitter taste. You can optionally pour the tea into a new pot.
One can also brew green tea using tea bags. With tea bags, they are indeed a bit easier to use, but often they don’t yield as much flavor since the tea leaves don’t have room to expand. We would recommend brewing green tea using loose-leaf tea to achieve optimal tea flavor. There are different methods for brewing green tea, this is one of them.
